Common terms used to describe the mental condition of those of us who must concentrate, meet deadlines, provide a service for people, and adjust to the demands of the work world and family life include “stress”, “burnout”, and usually “exhaustion”.

The drive for efficiency and increasing costs of providing for basic life functions, add to the pressures, as does the stress simply caused by change.

We all need help in “time management, as it is one remedy that does enable people to cope. If you want to head towards a more healthful workday, incorporate five-minute vacations when you can.

Those who give of themselves to others, whether at work or at home, must have time for replenishing vital forces from within themselves.

If we are expected to produce ideas, designs, or detailed work, we need a renewal of our intellect and creativity. Paper pushers, foremen, even harassed mothers, must make time capsules for coping ability and restoration during the day.

The United States Department of Labor website offers laws for specific states regarding breaks and lunch breaks. Each state differs.

In California the law states that a ten-minute rest period is required for each four hours worked. After five hours (if you work at least eight hours) you are to be given one-half hour for lunch.

Thankfully, many employers know the value of empowering breaks to regenerate, but even during a brief five-minute respite YOU can really use the time to relax completely.

For just five minutes, mentally (and, if possible, physically) remove yourself from the hurry of work and the demands of others. Use this time to relax completely. Even if the time is a restroom break, rest and regenerate in whatever room you can!

Use your oxygen to relax and regenerate your body. That can be done anywhere and at any time! Breathe now, inhaling slowly, and exhaling slowly. Continue while reading further.

The physiology, or functioning of your organs, will respond to this plug of oxygen by resuming normal functioning, as opposed to being riddled with stress.

If you have the opportunity to get up and move around, do so. Stretch and take a breath, as you want to invigorate your circulation. If you are stationery, you can still regenerate.

Breathe and consciously visualize all your muscles going limp for a moment. Relax, and breathe into your muscles. Now loosen up by rolling your shoulders forward and then backward. Drop your head from side to side slowly. Scrunch fingers together and stretch them out. Wiggle your toes and rotate your ankles. This is a GREAT little vacation!

If you are away from the “source” of your stress for a brief time, think about something lovely; dwell on the good that is around you. Look at a tree or a living plant; consider the diffusion of color and the design and symmetry

Take a five-minute walk outdoors if possible. Read something funny or think of something to tickle your sense of humor. Laugh (it’s healing).

Watch others and remember happiness is a CHOICE – no matter what!

Even one minute to breathe and move can give mental strength and invigorate the mind. Such little “vacations” give a change of pace, needed oxygen, relief from concentration, and stimulate the circulation.

Begin today to incorporate these small “breaks” and you will find a difference in your management of stress right away. I promise!

Well………so to speak!

Our technology-based culture has made many things easier and faster, but it’s taken a toll on the human body. You may spend you day hunched over a computer, sitting in traffic behind a steering wheel, or crammed into “space” that seems to get smaller and smaller (such as city streets, the market, theatres, etc).

As a direct result of this cramping of the human body people are loosing the ability to use their bodily core – the combination of shoulders, hip and torso – in a powerful and efficient manner. Though we are sitting on our gluteus maximus for longer hours, we are not using the muscles as nature intended-propelling the hips forward regularly.

That’s because we sit on the glutes and that causes the muscles opposite to them (hip flexors) to become short and stiff.

All this sitting, rolling of the shoulders forward, and relaxing of the abdominal muscles are playing havoc with our flexibility, our strength and endurance, and YES, our stress level!

You live in your body and when it’s not being used correctly, even your intellect suffers. So let’s do a tiny bit, right now, to activate your body and begin to feel better (and definitely less stressed out!)

First take a deep breath in through the nose quite slowly. Hold a second or two. Exhale through the mouth, from the bottom of the abdominal area and out. Do this several times.

Take a moment and squeeze your left butt cheek. Let it relax. Now squeeze your right cheek. Let it relax. Congrats! That is how to activate your glutes. You can do this throughout the day. It’s a secret way to work those muscles

If you learn to activate and fire your glutes, constantly, you will be on your way to mobility, and body stability.

Take a few more breaths and consciously hold your abs in, straighten and drop your shoulders. Now roll the shoulders in circles going towards your back (ten times). Reverse.

Stand up and clasp your hands and stretch to the sky. “Shake” hands as you bring them down. Stretch any way it feels good, and walk around somewhere for a minute or two-down the hall and back? Whatever you can squeeze in at the moment.

You will help your body to function optimally, and begin to manage your stress by activating your circulation and helping your body to relax. You are in charge of you!

Create a wonderful day!

Are you worried about your heart? Do you think you might be having a heart attack, or headed that direction? If you are fifty or older if is possible, but don’t be mislead, heart attacks can happen much younger!

Heart attacks are the leading cause of death in Americans. Are you stressed out at work? Worried about finances?

Family problems? Not sleeping good? All the stress adds up to trouble if not managed!

STRESS that is out of control and constant, can set you up for a fatal heart attack! This is not a rumor. This is factual.

Hundreds of websites are dedicated to helping you recognize signs that an attack is a probability, likely to happen sometime in your future. One sign might be heavy breathing. Often this symptom is NOT recognized as a pre-warning symptom; for many people there are no recognizable signs until the attack.

Simply put, you need to learn everything you can about what slows the progress of cardiovascular disease. And then do everything that’s known to modern medicine to reduce your heart attack risk factors.

Your heart health can’t wait – it depends on what you do today, and from this moment forward.

A simple prevention tip is to take a low-dose aspirin every day.

Remember aspirin can cause gastrointestinal bleeding, so take aspirin with caution. Though this is recommended for men, it can also prevent heart attacks in women – and possibly a stroke. It is a good idea to consult with a physician before starting aspirin therapy. (A single baby aspirin is often the aspirin of choice).

Another way to help prevent a heart attack is to keep your blood pressure under control. Unmanaged stress can elevate your blood pressure and accelerate your heart rate to unhealthy numbers.

When you feel flushed, excited, or recognize that stress level reaching unacceptable levels, take a breath. Slowly. When your blood pressure is rising, if you THINK and be mindful of your oxygen intake, you can slow your heart rate and keep your blood pressure from skyrocketing.

This technique is so easy many people don’t really the value of simply “controlling” your breathing.

YOU ARE AN OXYGEN MACHINE AND WITHOUT ENOUGH OXYGEN YOUR HEART WILL DIE!

Stress causes humans to only take in shallow breaths, which in turn, doesn’t allow the brain to get enough oxygen to think rationally instead of flying off the handle.

Lower your cholesterol. There are several ways to do this. Exercise (which will help you drop weight, and in turn drop pounds), improve your nutrition, and for your entire body and brain health and functioning – quit smoking.

If any of these things make you think, “I can’t do it” – and you begin to stress out – use your oxygen. When you are thinking optimally, decide what you want in this one life you have to live.

There are hundreds of websites to help you, programs like weight watchers, stress management classes (which will help you manage EVERYTHING), articles to read, yoga classes, adult community classes, even senior centers for those who qualify.

But nothing will be accomplished if you don’t make a decision and stick to it. If you think your family genes have doomed you to obesity, heart problems, cancer, diabetes, and so forth,

THINK AGAIN!

Genes account for one one-third of what happens to your body! The other two-thirds depends on the lifestyle you choose for yourself! HONESTLY….so take a breath and start this very moment to avert a heart attack and so many other illnesses’ that are self-induced.

YOU CAN DO IT!

All entries had wonderful pieces of good advice for beginning stress management. Choosing winners was a challenge and very difficult, as they were to me, all winners! Thanks everyone.

Today is gives me great pleasure to share with you the entries winning second and third place:

Second place winner: Valerie Yancy

Because we are three-part beings, it is most important to remember to keep all three parts in check as body, mind, and spirit all effect each other. The key is to practice the following top three habits BEFORE stress has set in. Preventive maintenance is a lot easier than trying to recover from a stressful breakdown.

1. A person will be successful at managing stress if they are well- prepared physically by getting enough rest, drinking plenty of water, and holding correct posture. When stress begins to creep in, monitor the body’s posture and relax tense muscles in the neck, ease shoulders and lower extremities, release a furrowed brow by massaging temples, and breathe deeply from the diaphragm.

2. Keeping your thoughts positive is an obvious tip; but I want to dig deeper into what may be the root of all stress; isolation or helplessness. Ask for help! Stress stems from the feeling of having to ”go at it alone”. When we solicit help, a friend sharing the load makes all the difference in the most difficult task and in turn will keep our thoughts positive.

3. Prayer/meditation or visualization of the end goal can help you get and stay spiritually centered and ward off stress. Staying aware and calling upon your inner HELP can ignite the flow of supernatural wisdom throughout the mind and body to bring about success in managing most any situation.

Angel709

——————————————–

Third place winner: Freddy Doyle

1. Deep breathing is the quickest and most effective stress management strategy. It is the simplest and most effective way to begin relaxation. The simple act of taking in a great quantity of air—filling your lungs and holding it—will immediately release tension in your back and neck muscles, clear your head, and bring a sense of peace. This technique brought awareness of my ability to empower myself and was instrumental in by being able disengage from stresses before doing more damage to my mind and body.

2. When you feel yourself getting stressed out (pay attention and don’t ignore it and you will know) just stop what you are doing and walk away. You don’t have to go far away, but just far enough to divert your own attention from the problem for a minute or so. Walk to the restroom, stand and stretch, do something to give you enough time to recover a bit. Take a few breaths.

3. Find what is triggering your stresses. It is family stress, emotional stress, health, environmental, or chemical stress? If you are able to reduce the strength of the stress by changing something, do it. If traffic is driving you insane, play a calm and beautiful CD and it will calm you from within. If you are bothered by noise and can’t think, buy earplugs! These are just a few examples. If there is no easy fix then practice empowering yourself instantly with your breathing.

———————————

Tip: If you plan to go out in the sun, don’t forget your sunscreen. Sunglasses with UV protection are a must! Have fun.

Allow that pent up stress to be released as you exhale. Holding worry and fear within will broaden your burden.

Let it fall from your fingertips like the rain from new leaves.

Take another breath and remember these are the moments of your life. This moment is the only moment you can be sure of; no one knows what the next moments will bring. Use this moment wisely and be happy. Happiness is always a choice.

Another deep breath please. Now exhale and release those pent up feelings of stress. Visualize them flying from your fingertips into oblivion. Release those unresolvable and fleeting stresses that tie you up in knots.

As long as you keep fear in the forefront of your mind, it will bring despair and terror to your heart. Let it go.

Move into a new world ever so lightly. Keep hold of hope and good thoughts. Do not let the world change you. Change YOUR world. It is possible. It is easier than you dream. As you perceive your world you create it.

Keep in mind that any problem will pass with time. That is a promise in life. But in order for that to happen you must release it. The past is the past and the future is a dream. Live happly in this moment to waft on the winds of your soul.

—————————-

“…I am proof against that word failure. I’ve seen behind it. The only failure a man ought to fear is failure in cleaving to the purpose he sees to be best. As to just the amount of result he may see from his particular work-that’s a tremendous uncertainty; the universe has not been arranged for the gratification of his feels. As long as a man sees and believes in some great good, he’ll prefer working toward that in the way he’s best fit for, come what may. I put the effects at their minimum, but I’d rather have the minimum of effect if it’s of the sort I care for, than the maximum of effect I’ don’t care for – a lot of fine things that are not to my taste-and if they were, the conditions of holding them while the world is what it is, are such as would jar me like grating metal.”

Felix Holt – 1885

—————————–

Your oxygen is your number one ally in the war against rage and useless stress held within your mind. It is a commodity you carry with you every single moment of your life. Use it and choose your thoughts and words carefully.

Create a wonderful day by using your gift of oxygen and the power of positive thinking. No one can manage your stress for you, and you can only do it if you practice, from moment to moment, creating a new you.

Did you know that unmanaged stress can play a huge role in our bodies succumbing to various diseases.

A famous cancer specialist, Dr. Carl Simonton, wrote: “There is considerable research that points to stress as being an influencing factor in the susceptibility of and resistance to cancer, as well as to the course of the disease itself.”

Stress itself is emphasized by noting that both endocrine and immune functions are so sensitive to the influence of stress that measurable effects can be noted and characterized in both animal and human studies.

External stressors seem to overload human systems, particularly if the bodies have already been exhausted from the internal stress of not getting needs met for a long time. It is probable that this research can support the role of stress in many other chronic and catastrophic diseases.

Negative thoughts (or black thoughts) when allowed to travel from the brain to the organ systems cause such stress on the systems that eventually they become overloaded and cannot even recognize there is a problem. It is then a person can succumb to chronic and catastrophic diseases such as heart attacks, adrenal failure and cancer.

The way you view life situations can create a healthier life for you if you change negative thoughts to positive ones.

Below are simple activities than can help you live more in control of your stresses. You will come to manage stress more effectively than you ever imagined.

1. Make realistic “to do” lists, and check off tasks when done.

2. Learn to live with unfinished tasks – only a corpse is completely finished!

3. Slow your pace of talking, walking and eating.

4. Leave time in your schedule for the unexpected.

5. Move through your day slow enough to experience beauty in the environment.

6. Find time each day to PRACTICE relaxing – whether it is in the form of a yoga class, meditating, praying, or simply mindful breathing breaks throughout the day.

7. Use any waiting in line or stopping for lights as an opportunity to practice deep breathing techniques. You will relax, regenerate and empower yourself by doing so.

8. Remember certain types of music can help your heat rate to slow, and your blood pressure to lower to healthy numbers.

9. If you can “delegate” or leave details to someone else (at home or in the office), take advantage of lightening your load by doing so.

10. As yourself whether that pressing “something” must be done this hour/ or this day. Would it be catastrophic if you couldn’t squeeze it in? If so, then practice your breathing so your intellect will sharpen and your shoulders and neck will stay relaxed and supple.

Now take a breath or two, stretch a bit, and go forth in a more relaxed manner to success in your endeavors in this life of yours!

If you have a few minutes to spend on an easy project: enter our contest! Some great stress management gifts will be awarded. Check the upper left- hand corner for rules.

It has been proven you can keep a sharp edge on your intellect throughout your life. Many scientists believe that the combination of a person’s innate ability, and the additional brainpower that comes from consistently challenging the mind, will manifest in what is called “cognitive reserve”.

Studies have shown that diverse and mentally stimulating tasks result in more brain cells! Also, a greater ability to bypass age-related trouble spots in the brain is quite apparent.

The more you work your mind, the greater your cognitive reserve. The greater the reserve, the better ability you will have to withstand inevitable challenges of aging. Keep in mind that we all begin to age way before fifty!

As a survivor of multiple traumatic incidents, and a stress management specialist, I have learned you can “retrain” your brain to accommodate any incident, or series of incidents that manifest in your life. You can create new brain cells with new thoughts and habits. Doing these things will begin for you a lifelong experience of stress management, better health, and will put you on the path to stay as sharp as possible. Exquisite breathing can really enhance these processes.

You are reading to find out about how to manage the stress in your life that may seem overwhelming and chaotic. If you spend your life reliving your misery, or anger, and struggling just to swim in a pool of sadness, what does it accomplish? NOTHING. Time spent “mourning the past” just trashes any chance of peace and progress that is still available to you. We do have wonderful brains that can keep learning no matter how we have diligently tried to kill all the cells by the “party on” philosophy. I’ve been there too – big time.

There are bound to be some physical restrictions and mental problems that may increase with aging, and for some, those problems may inhibit to some degree some areas of retaining a sharp intellect. Reasons for this decline might be a loss of neural connections, a blockage of blood supply, and perhaps decreases in nerve-signaling chemicals. Memory can diminish with age, though only certain types.

Typically “learned skills” are so firmly wired in individuals, they typically do not decline unless you have a disease such as Alzheimer’s.

But for most people, the ability to keep that edge is dependent only on a few things. The commitment to exercise (even moderately) is imperative, as movement is so crucial to brain health cognitive thinking, changes in aging can be the result of inactivity. Refresh the brain on a daily basis with new thoughts, new information, and new habits. If your memory, as you age, is suffering, it is probably your short-term memory. Some moderate loss is to be expected.

After all, this wonderful human machine clicks along for years and years.

So how are you going to keep your brain at it’s best? BY GROWING NEW BRAIN CELLS! Scientists believe certain lifestyle habits can spark the cells’ growth. I believe the use of your oxygen combined with habitual thoughts (new thoughts for advancement preferably), will absolutely grow new brain cells.

In a nutshell:

1. Pay attention to your mental and physical changes.

2. Make sure you “exercise” your brain with new information.

3. Exercise your body.

4. Incorporate good nutrition in your life, as many memory

problems stem from vitamin deficiencies.

5. Be the master of your own thoughts. Thought manifest into

action, and your behavior becomes your life.

When you find out that you or someone you love, needs to have a hysterectomy STRESS will begin to compound.

“Hysterectomy, the surgical removal of the uterus, is a procedure surrounded by controversy – and for good reason. Hysterectomy is the second most common major operation performed in the United States today, second only to cesarean section. Approximately 600,000 American women have a hysterectomy every year…. By the age of 60, one out of every three women in the U.S. has had a hysterectomy.

(Excerpts from “A Gynecologist’s Second Opinion” by William H. Parker, M.D.)

No one wants to “go under the knife”. Misinformation and all sorts of things will begin to slap you in the face mentally.

“Will our insurance cover this? Will I still be a woman and have sexual feelings? Will my wife ever be the same or will she change? Will I gain weight? Who will take care of me? Will I have to take time off work to be a caregiver?”

These are just a few of the legitimate questions that may plague you initially. They all need to be answered. They will all be attended to in time.

First you need to take a breath. Take it right now. Inhale slowly through the nose, and exhale slowly through the mouth. Do it again and deeply.

As you inhale think: “I am bringing in healing oxygen to relax and think optimally.”

As you exhale think: “Negative thoughts and worries are leaving me now as they are of no use.”

Use your oxygen often and mindfully. This is a gift. It is a magical technique to really assist you in dire circumstances. As you practice, when times of urgency arise, you will find yourself using your oxygen as really a personal way to empower your mind and truly affect your physical being.

Thousands of hysterectomies are performed each year safely. The instances of calamity and extended troubles are not frequent. What is frequent, is successful hysterectomies.

There is so much fine information on the Internet alone. You will need to do your homework. Get a second opinion. Inquire as to the possibility of natural solutions instead of surgery. Sometimes women are able to use natural methods to get a handle on the situation. Sometimes surgery is the only option.

Whatever the decision remember this

YOU CAN ONLY DO THE BEST THAT YOU CAN DO IN RESEARCH AND MAKING ARRANGEMENTS. THE “BEST FRIEND” YOU CAN FIND IS ACCEPTANCE OF THE SITUATION. GO FORWARD WITH A POSITIVE ATTITUDE. You may have no other choice in the matter, and ultimately, if you find you or someone you love needs the surgery, it may be the best thing that can happen for your good health.

If you believe in a power beyond yourself, start praying breathe, and try to relax – it will be okay!

Do you remember the last time you laughed out loud?

Laughter is a powerful antidote to aid in the management of stress, pain, and conflict.

There is nothing that works faster, or can lighten your burden better than laughter. It is one of the most powerful tools you have to support your emotional health, and your daily mood.

Physical benefits

A hearty laugh relaxes the entire body, relieving physical tension and stress, and it leaves your muscles relaxed for almost an hour after.

Laughter releases endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. These endorphins promote a sense of wellbeing, and can even help to relieve pain.

Your resistance to disease will increase as you incorporate into your life. It decreases stress hormones and actually increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies.

Laughter even protects the heart! It actually improves the function of blood vessels and increases blood flow, which can help protect you against a heart attack and cardiovascular problems.

Humor is really infectious. When you hear the sound of roaring laughter, even if you are not aware of the scenario, you will most certainly smile! The domino effect of laughter triggering laughter triggers those physical changes in the body.

Remember hearing a child laugh wildly as he or she is being tickled….just the sound makes anyone within hearing distance enjoy their day just a little more.

When laughter is shared it always increases happiness. It binds people together is a shared joy. Laughter simply makes you feel good, and the feeling stays with you long after the sound subsides.

Laughter helps you keep a positive and optimistic outlook. It is rather a “mini-vacation” from sadness and pain, and even in very difficult times, laughter can surely help in making you feel better. It stimulates the brain and makes you ready for more fun and relaxation. It stays in the memory and can cause you to smile hours afterwards.

Benefits for optimum mental health

You simply CANNOT feel angry, sad, or anxious when you are honestly laughing. Not the kind of “laughter” you may feel required to do when you are trying to be courteous or join the group. The kind of laughter that comes from your heart is irreplaceable.

You will reduce stress and increase your energy because you are more relaxed. Humor allows you to shift your perspective to see situations in a more realistic way, a less threatening light. This type perspective creates psychological distance, which can help you avoid feeling overwhelmed about the circumstances.

Laughter is innate and it is your right. Though often you may feel there is nothing to laugh about, you can always find humor in life – if you just try! The absurdity of stoic behavior abounds in life. If you focus and allow yourself to picture things in a different way, you will really find there is so much to laugh about; you will want to weave laughter into every day of your life once you feel it’s benefits!

Read a joke book. Go to a comedy club. Rent a movie. Get together with friends. Start laughing today! Practice a positive attitude change through the use of positive humor. Begin to see humor all around you in puns, irony and oxymora.

Remember – “cutting” humor is not really funny. If your words pierce someone’s heart, or if you have to say “Oh, I was just kidding” – it’s probably not humorous, but more in the line of ridicule or words that are harming someone else. Condition your mind to find positive humor and it will surely help manage your stress.

Did you know that if you choose to listen to music that flows along with the natural heart rate you could relax your mind and lower your stress level.

Music has been used therapeutically for years in mental health settings, but it was discovered only a decade or so ago that it can have dramatic effects in the realm of physically healing persons in intensive care units.

In particular studies at one hospital, observations were made of levels of heart rate, blood pressure and medication needs. There were significant decreases recorded in patient anxiety, heart rates, and blood pressure levels when selected music was played.

Initial observations in the studies prompted the use of music in surgery, pre-op, recovery and other areas in the hospital. One of the most dramatic results of the use of music in the surgical areas was a fifty percent reduction in the need for anesthetics.

Currently over one hundred hospitals and research centers use music as a therapeutic way to relax, and as a way to enhance the patient’s ability to relax.

Pain sufferers have been found to benefit from musical listening not only for relaxation, but an adjunct for mental imagery development. The emotional power of music has long been recognized. It is the real power of these emotions that is of recent discovery.

There is a growing field of therapy which ranges from group therapy to individual counseling in which the individuals use music and images to promote healing in an institutional setting. Still some question the value, but acceptance of its value is spreading. Anything that can help a patient cope or even thrive in an unfamiliar, and often-impersonal setting, such as a hospital, could be a valuable resource.

Now think about the music that is played while you shop for groceries, or in a department store, or an office. You’ve heard the different types of music.

Did you know that many grocery stores gear the type music they play to the preferred music of the “average age” shopper?

Think about when you drive up to a stoplight and you hear loud music, usually with a loud base tone, and how it makes you feel. Example: rap or hard rock.

Perhaps you’ve been in high intensity aerobics or kick-boxing;

the music is probably “pumped up” with a steady beat to promote that kind of movement. All music CAN serve a purpose.

For stressful times, CHOOSE to listen to with a calm and light feeling, type of music, perhaps, with no lyrics. You won’t be forced to listen to someone else’s thoughts, but find yourself listening to yourself.

The rhythm will begin to slow your heart rate and lower your blood pressure. Even while driving in traffic, if the selection of your music is calming to your heart and mind, it will calm your demeanor.

Try it and you will find after changing the habit of playing high-energy music, you will begin to feel relaxation coming on as the music plays. Music can be a thoroughly pleasurable aid to managing your stress.
